Steven & Dad (pitman) ran motors in all day Wednesday.We
had 120 competitors at this event, the most we have had
at a Nationals for a number of years. We had the normal pace
setting competitors like Jesse Davis, Chris Reade, Wayne Walker,
Simon Nicholson & Michael Kerr who just came back to Australia
after 4 years.
We got to the track on Thursday morning looking to finalize
setups as Peter Junior was unable to get to the track before
then as he had work commitments. We where all ready to
start practice until the normal thing that always happens
at these events, it started to rain. It rained all day
Thursday which was good for Steven as he was very sick &
slept in the car all day.
After a good nights rest we where all prepared to get some qualifiying
in. After the first qualifying heat we had Steven in TQ in touring
car & Simon Nicholson in 1/8th scale.Steven set a new track
record in the 1/8th scale car & also posted the fastest
single best lap in touring car. By the end of the day we
had Peter in TQ for touring with Steven in second & Peter
was in second for 1/8th with Steven in third.After qualifying
was finished we had Peter top qualifier in touring with Steven
in second & we had Steven qualify 3rd in 1/8th with Peter
in 2nd place.
Going in to the finals Peter & Steven where very confident
with there setups & motors. The touring car final was first
up & we had a clean start to the race.By the end of
the first lap we had Peter & Steven out in front & racing
for first place.Steven was desperatly trying to get past Peter
as his car was alot better early in the race.As Steven tried
to take Peter his motor stopped. The glow plug was changed &
Steven was back out there but lost about 2-3 laps. Peter drove
a clean race & finished with out a scratch on the car to
take his second Nationals in a row.Steven managed to unlap himself
once to Peter but couldnt do much better than that.Steven finished
5th.
That 1/8th scale race was now on. There was a delay called by
Peter as he had some mechanical problem that he found with his
car.He got it all fixed & was all ready for the race.Steven
got his ready to go out when there was 1 minute left in the
delay when he found the steering wasnt working in the car.All
the car got lined up on the grid when suddenly the radio gear
all started working. Stevens pitman managed to get him
out on the grid & again it was a fairly clean start
but after the corner Steven was in 10th position.Peter got a
clean start but ended up smashing his car into the tyres &
that put him out of the race.Steven after about 2minutes in
managed to get in to second position as he set the fastest
time of the race. At the 20 minute mark Steven came
in for a tyre change that was blistering fast & return to
running the race. The first 5 minutes after the tyre change for
Steven where very slow.But after the next fuel stop he was was
around .5 of a second faster tha any other car on the track.
The lead car came in to do a tyre change after the 35 minute
mark & took around 1 lap longer than Stevens with him
having 5 people changing his tyres( and got no penalty
for it).With 5 minute to go Steven was now chasing a new leader(
Michael Kerr) that didnt do a tyre change.After changing positions
with him around 10 times Steven managed to get past on
the seond last lap & take the win for his first Nationals
Championships.
