This year it is the
first year that there is an EFRA EC "A" and "B"
for the 1:10 200MM class in Europe.
So the EC-B went to Roeselare (Belgium) and the EC-A to Madrid
(Spain).
Altrough Madrid is not to "coolest" place to be in
the middle of the summer, the temprature went over the 30'C...with
these high tempratures there where 146 drivers willing to fight
the heat.
Among those 146 drivers there are a lot of famous names; Balestri
(EC 2006 champion), Mazzeo, Groskamp, Leino, Salven, Hidalgo,
Johnson, Peracho, Pietsch and many more.
This would became a good close racing recipy!
After 4 days of free practise it became time to see who was
the fastest for 5 minutes during their qualifing sessions.
And when the "dust" was gone after the first qualifing
serie we find our team drivers back on these places:
24: Robert Pietsch
28: J. Hidalgo
42: Mario Spinello
44: Dario Balestri
These places are far from what our drivers are used to, but
as this only the first serie they will improve their places
massively!
After 4 series of qualifing there was an huge change in the
rankinglist compared to ranking after the first serie...
Our drivers have themself placed on the following places after
4 series of qualifingrounds:
5: Darren Johnson
9: Juanito Hildago
19: Mario Spinello
26: Dario Balestri
31: Robert Pietsch
43: Rocco Ania
Those places where enough for our drivers to take a relaxing
dive in the swimmingpool of the hotel because they had to start
on sunday!
The big improvement Darren Johnson came because he tried the
set-up of local and teammate Juanito Hidalgo, that made it possible
to come from well down below to just missed direct final spot.
Darren Johnson was only .043 of a second slower then the fourth
placed man!
How close can racing be!
Rocco Ania was the first driver from the NOVAROSSI team to come
in action, he qualifing time delivered him the 6th place in
the 1/8 A final.
Unfortunatly he needed to make 2 pit stops of well over 1 minute
which ruined all his 1/4 hopes...
Next up was the current European champion, Dario Balestri,
in the 1/4 B final.
This time he also tried the set-up of Hidalgo, which helped
him win this quarter B final.
Altrough Dario was not really happy with the car because it
had to much steering, he changed that for the next final (semi
B).
During the 1/4 A final Robert Pietsch was on pace for the first
place, he should be in the semi A final... if... he did not
get disqualified.
But at the same quarter final the young Mario Spiniello drove
very good, that good that he managed to claim the second place
and thus moving up to the semi A final!
The semi finals where some nice close racing for 20 minutes,
again Dario Balestri managed to win this final.
Coming from the 8th place he finished one second ahead of number
2, Adrien Bertin.
During the Semi B (Dario's final) there was also some drama.
Some of the marshalls where a little bit to eager to return
crashed/stopped cars back to the pitlane... two times a marshall
caused a crash while returning another car!
This forced Francesco Tironi to retire after a marshall stepped
on his car.
After the semi B it was time for the semi A, with Mario Spiniello,
Juanito Hidalgo and Darren Johnson.
Darren Johnson started from the first position, but ran in some
trouble what resulted in a 5th place after 20 minutes of racing.
Juanito and Mario did also well, unfortunatly this final was
not as fast as the Semi B final.
Juanito finished on the 3rd place, Mario 4th.
Juanito, Mario and Darren finished all in the same lap with
on 7 seconds between them.
After all the cars where OK after the technical inspection
it became time for the final of the final, the main final.
In this 45 minute long final would bring the new European champion.
Due the nature of the track, with low tire wear, no driver decided
to make a tire change.
This would cost more time then it could gain.
After a chaotic start...
During the warmup everything was fine, but in the test lap Alessio's
car got radio trouble on the straight, his mecanic asked for
a ten minute delay after the 30 second mark and he got it...partly.
This caused a lot of confusion, and after the EFRA corrected
this action the start got underway as it should be, only with
a delay of 4 minutes.
With this delay Alessio changed some radio gear and started
along with the rest of the pack, only exiting from the pitlane.
The race was full of action, with Oscar Cabezas being superfast,
after 10 minutes he was well ahead of the rest.
But during 2 pitstops his engine flamed out, this dropped him
far back behind the leaders.
Dario had a super start but shortly after he got cought up in
traffic with dropped him back to the sixt place.
This fired him up and started chasing very hard, and with the
help of the fast pitstops of his mecanics (Claudia & Stefano)
he could take the lead with ten minutes to go.
During the pitstops there was some changes in the ranking, Dario
dropped to second and giving the lead to Jilles but when Jilles
stopped for some fresh fuel, Dario passed him.
At the end of the 45 minute final Dario pulled out a lead of
1 lap ahead of Jilles Groskamp and with this lead Dario became
the 2007 1:10 200MM european champion!
After winning it in 2006, with the same combination.
With winning this race Dario showed the rest of Europe that
he is the man to beat!
The top 3:
1 - Dario Balestri
2 - Jilles Groskamp
3 - Alessio Mazzeo |
